Why is finding a recipe online such a mission?

You searched for something to cook, not an evening of screen admin before touching a saucepan. Online recipes sometimes make the easiest part of dinner surprisingly hard to reach.

You want dinner, and searching β€œeasy chicken pasta” sounds easy enough until the page opens and your thumb is already on overtime before you have found the oven temperature.

Some recipe pages place the ingredient card below introductions, photographs, newsletter boxes, cookie choices, adverts, substitutions and comments. None of those elements makes the recipe wrong. The frustration starts when finding four teaspoons of paprika takes more scrolling than you wanted.

You came for dinner, not the backstory

A recipe requires some context. Knowing why dough rests or which cut of meat works best is useful, while a family memory about Sunday lunch may be worth reading when you have time. At 18:20, with an onion chopped and the pan heating, your priorities become less literary.

The irritation is not that a recipe has a story. It is having to hunt for the information you came for while dinner is already underway. A useful recipe page gives you the choice to read the extra detail or go straight to what you need.

Recipes create another small problem when the serving size does not match your household. If you are cooking for one, a four-serving recipe may require a little maths before you reach the stove.

The strange maths of cooking for one person
Cooking for one gets tricky when recipes and pack sizes assume you have company. A little planning can mean less waste and fewer forgotten vegetables in the fridge.

Then the page wants something from you

Before you reach an ingredient quantity, a site may ask about website cookies, offer a newsletter sign-up or invite you to create an account. Each request has a purpose, but several in a row means more screen admin before you have read the method.

A β€œJump to recipe” button starts looking very appealing at that stage. You opened the page because you need dinner, and perhaps because you already have chicken thawed, three mushrooms left and no interest in discovering a new lifestyle.

The recipe itself should be easy to find

Ingredients need to be easy to scan, method steps need a sensible order and measurements need enough detail to follow while you cook. Notes, substitutions and personal stories still have a place once the essentials are easy to reach.

You should not need a strategy to find out how long the potatoes go in the oven. A recipe can have personality and useful notes while giving the method a visible place on the page. When dinner is underway, finding the information quickly makes the page easier to use.

Finding dinner inspiration online gives you many options in one search. The experience can be frustrating when the information you came for is buried beneath other page elements. A recipe has done its job when you reach the kitchen knowing what you need, what comes next and whether dinner is happening before bedtime.
