Cancelling an online subscription should be easier than this...

Deleting an app does not necessarily end the subscription behind it. Before the next debit, check the cancellation route and make sure the service confirms the end date.

You signed up in under a minute, but months later you want out, and suddenly you are opening account settings, billing pages and confirmation emails to find the one option you came for. A subscription should not turn into admin archaeology the moment you decide to cancel.

Start by working out what you agreed to, how you are billed, when the next payment is due and what the cancellation terms require. Those details tell you which route to follow and what proof you need afterwards.

Find the route before you cancel

Open the account settings and check billing or membership first. If cancellation is not visible, go back to the confirmation email or original terms, then use a channel that leaves a record.

Save screenshots, emails, reference numbers and the date you submitted the request. A written cancellation trail gives you something concrete if the company later needs proof of when notice was given.

How to cancel a gym contract and preserve the paper trail
Ending a gym contract can become messy when verbal promises replace written confirmation. A few careful records can help you prove when you cancelled and what the gym agreed to.
A cancellation request should leave more behind than a vague memory of clicking something at 22:47. Save the page, the date, the reference number and the message you sent. If another charge appears, you have something better than β€œI swear I cancelled it.”

Know which agreement you signed

An online subscription does not describe one legal arrangement. Some services renew monthly, while others form part of a fixed-term agreement, which means the cancellation terms may differ.

If your subscription is a fixed-term consumer agreement covered by Section 14 of the Consumer Protection Act, the Consumer Goods and Services Ombud explains that you may cancel with 20 business days’ written notice. You may still owe charges up to the cancellation date, and the supplier may impose a reasonable cancellation penalty.

Read the terms before treating deletion of an app, removal of a card or a stopped debit order as proof of cancellation. Useful evidence comes from confirmation that the subscription itself ended through the route required by the agreement.

A clean exit gives you certainty about the final date, the final charge and the end of access. You should not need to guess whether an "Unsubscribe" button worked. Written confirmation gives you something concrete to use if the account is billed again.
