The real cost of a balloon payment

A balloon payment can cut your monthly instalment by pushing part of the financed amount to the end of the agreement. Knowing the final figure upfront can help you compare the full deal before you sign.

A lower car instalment can be very persuasive when your budget is already crowded. The finance quote shows a monthly number you can live with, and suddenly the car looks much closer to home. A balloon payment can create that lower figure, but part of the bill is due at the end, not erased.

In WesBank’s vehicle-finance example, a R350,000 car financed over 60 months at 11.5% costs about R7,700 a month without a balloon. A 20% balloon drops the monthly instalment to about R6,830, while R70,000 becomes due at the end. Total repayment in the example increases from about R462,000 to R480,000.

Your monthly debit order gets the nicer number

A balloon does not discount the car. It postpones part of the debt until the end of the finance term, which is why the monthly debit order can look kinder. Future You still gets the bill.

Your car payment also shares the month with petrol, maintenance and insurance. Saving on the instalment does not help much if the rest of the ownership costs have been squeezed out of the budget. An enticing premium can create a similar trap when a higher insurance excess would leave you funding a sizeable amount after an approved claim. The monthly number deserves company. Put the balloon amount and total repayment beside it before deciding whether the deal fits your finances.

Future You still gets the final bill

Once the finance term ends, the balloon has to be dealt with. WesBank gives three options in its guidance, a once-off settlement, a trade-in that contributes towards the balloon, or an application to refinance the amount.

Refinance means another credit application. Your financial circumstances may look very different several years after buying the car, which makes your credit score habits worth considering long before the final instalment. A trade-in needs its own maths. If the vehicle is worth less than the amount needed to settle the balloon, the shortfall does not disappear with the keys.

Read the whole finance deal, not one friendly number

Before signing, put the vehicle price, deposit, interest rate, finance term, monthly instalment, balloon percentage, balloon amount and total repayment on the same page.

The car deserves scrutiny as well. Used-car paperwork, service records and an inspection can expose expenses or concerns that have nothing to do with the monthly finance quote but can still land squarely in your budget.

The monthly instalment is the number you live with from payday to payday. The balloon is the number waiting for you at the end. A finance quote tells the full story only when you look at both.

A balloon payment is not automatically a bad deal, and finance without one is not automatically the right choice. Compare the monthly instalment, final amount and total repayment before you sign. Years from purchase day, the last figure on the quote should not become the first surprise.
